grabnr — Multi-Connection Download Manager

Every Network Connection, One Download

Overview

  • Built a cross-platform download manager that uses Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB and phone tethering at the same time to download a single file.
  • Files are split into chunks in a shared queue. A worker bound to each network interface pulls the next chunk, so faster links automatically take more of the work.
  • Wrote the engine in Rust: interface discovery and binding, tail racing, adaptive connections per link, resume across restarts, retries with backoff, checksums, mirrors and Metalink.
  • Handled links that join or leave mid-download, and recovery from stalled connections and sleep and wake.
  • Added FTP, SFTP, BitTorrent and magnet links, and HLS streams, all split over every link.
  • Built the desktop app with Tauri 2 and React: download list, chunk map, per-link speed graph, menu bar popover, command palette and scheduling.
  • Shipped a browser extension for Chrome, Brave, Edge, Firefox and Safari, a CLI on the same engine, and a UI in six languages.
  • Set up CI and release builds for macOS, Linux and Windows, and published a project site on GitHub Pages under the MIT license.
